Parent Information Sheet: Understanding the Assessment Process for Behaviour and Development Concerns.
What is an Assessment?
When concerns arise about your child’s behaviour or development, a thorough assessment helps us understand their strengths and challenges. This process allows us to tailor support to their needs, whether or not a formal diagnosis is made.
What Can You Expect During the Assessment Process?
1. First Appointment
In the initial session, we will begin by getting to know your child and learning more about your concerns. This session typically involves gathering information about their developmental history, behaviours, and any prior assessments or interventions they’ve had. Please remember that a diagnosis may not be provided in the first session.
2. Information Gathering from Multiple Sources
To develop a full picture of your child’s development, information will also be gathered from a variety of sources:
This phase may involve completing questionnaires, interviews, and sometimes school observations.
- Parents/Guardians: Your insights about your child’s behaviour at home, their social interactions, and daily functioning are crucial.
- Teachers/School: Understanding how your child behaves and learns in a school setting helps us assess their educational needs.
- Therapists or Other Professionals (if involved): If your child has been working with other specialists (e.g., speech therapists, psychologists), their input provides important context.
3. Multiple Sessions May Be Needed
A comprehensive assessment often takes place over several sessions. Each session allows us to explore different aspects of your child’s development, including their social skills, learning ability, behaviour, and emotional wellbeing. These sessions ensure we collect enough information to make an informed diagnosis or develop a management plan.
4. Standardised Testing and Observations
In some cases, we may use standardised tools and assessments to understand your child’s strengths and areas for development. These can help identify patterns of behaviour or learning that may be part of developmental conditions like Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), or learning difficulties.
Why Is the Process Sometimes Lengthy?
- Complexity of Child Development: Children’s behaviour and development are complex and can be influenced by various factors, such as their home environment, school setting, and health.
- Gathering a Complete Picture:Â Accurate diagnosis and appropriate supports require detailed information from several sources to ensure no aspect of your child’s development is overlooked.
- Avoiding Misdiagnosis:Â A careful and thorough process reduces the risk of incorrect or incomplete diagnoses, ensuring that your child receives the most appropriate support.
Will a Diagnosis Be Provided?
A formal diagnosis is not always the outcome of the first assessment, or even the entire process. Some children may need further observation, while others may have needs that do not fit within a specific diagnosis. Either way, the goal is to identify the best strategies to support your child’s development, regardless of whether a diagnosis is made.
Next Steps After the Assessment
Once all the necessary information is gathered, we will discuss the results with you. This conversation may involve:
- Feedback on the assessment findings.
- A discussion of whether a diagnosis is appropriate.
- Development of a plan to support your child’s specific needs, whether through therapy, school-based supports, or other interventions.
How to Prepare for the Assessment
To ensure the assessment process runs smoothly:
- Gather any previous reports or assessments.
- Complete any questionnaires provided.
- Discuss with your child’s school about their input.
- Prepare to share detailed observations of your child’s behaviour and development.
We appreciate your patience and participation in this process. Our goal is to provide you and your child with the most accurate and helpful support possible.
If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to ask during your appointments.
