Therapeutic Art Facilitator

We’re excited to introduce a new way to support children’s emotional wellbeing at Paeds in a Pod, through the power of creativity.

Art Therapy is now available with Suchi Iyengar, a Therapeutic Art Facilitator with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. Combining therapeutic expertise with engaging, hands-on art experiences, Suchi offers children a safe and supportive space to express themselves, build confidence, and explore their emotions in a way that feels natural to them.

In this blog, Suchi explores what art therapy is, how it works, and how it can support your child’s emotional growth and wellbeing.

In today’s fast-paced and often overwhelming world, children don’t always have the words to express what they feel. This is where art therapy offers something truly powerful; a safe, creative, and non-verbal way for children to explore their emotions, build resilience, and feel understood.

What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a form of therapeutic support that uses creative expression such as drawing, painting, and mixed media to help individuals explore emotions, process experiences, and improve mental wellbeing.

Unlike regular art classes, art therapy is not focused on artistic skill or the final product. Instead, it focuses on the process of creating, allowing children to express thoughts and feelings they may not yet have the words for.

At the same time, our approach is unique while we deeply value the therapeutic process, we also incorporate engaging and visually rewarding art forms that children genuinely enjoy creating. This means children not only feel supported during the process but also experience a sense of pride and accomplishment in what they create.

Sessions are guided by a trained art therapist who gently supports the child in exploring their inner world through creativity, reflection, and conversation (when appropriate).

Who is Art Therapy For?

Art therapy can benefit a wide range of children, including those who:

  • Experience anxiety, stress, or overwhelm
  • Have difficulty expressing emotions verbally
  • Are navigating behavioural or emotional challenges
  • Have experienced trauma, grief, or significant life changes
  • Struggle with social interactions or confidence
  • Have developmental differences, including autism or ADHD
  • Simply need a safe space to build self-esteem and emotional awareness

Importantly, no artistic ability is required, every child can engage in art therapy in their own unique way.

What Are the Benefits of Art Therapy?

Art therapy supports children across emotional, social, and developmental areas. Some key benefits include:

Emotional Regulation

Children learn to identify, express, and manage their emotions in a safe and supported way.

Improved Communication

Art provides an alternative language, helping children communicate feelings they may not be able to verbalise.

Increased Confidence and Self-Esteem

Creating artwork fosters a sense of achievement and helps children feel seen and valued, especially when they can take pride in their finished pieces.

Reduced Anxiety and Stress

The calming, mindful nature of art-making helps regulate the nervous system and reduce anxiety.

Enhanced Social Skills

In group settings, children learn to share, collaborate, and connect with others.

Trauma Processing and Healing

Art allows children to safely process difficult experiences at their own pace.

How Are Art Therapy Sessions Run?

Art therapy sessions are thoughtfully structured while remaining flexible to meet each child’s needs.

Individual Sessions

  • One-on-one sessions tailored to the child’s goals
  • Begin with a gentle check-in to understand how the child is feeling
  • Introduction of a creative activity (e.g., painting emotions, storytelling through art, sensory-based art)
  • Use of engaging, textured, or visually appealing art styles to enhance enjoyment
  • Time for reflection, either verbally or through the artwork
  • Closing routine to ensure the child feels grounded and safe

Group Sessions

  • Small, supportive groups of children with similar age or needs
  • Activities designed to encourage connection, cooperation, and shared expression
  • Opportunities to build social confidence in a safe environment
  • Collaborative and enjoyable art experiences that children feel proud to share

Therapeutic Approach

Sessions are:

  • Child-led and non-judgmental
  • Focused on emotional safety and trust
  • Adapted to suit developmental levels and individual preferences
  • Designed to balance therapeutic exploration with enjoyable, meaningful creation
  • Conducted in a calm, welcoming environment

What Makes Art Therapy Different from Art Classes?

While both involve creativity, the intention is very different.

Art Classes Art Therapy
Focus on skills and techniques Focus on emotions and self-expression
Outcome-oriented (final artwork) Process-oriented (experience of creating)
Structured teaching approach Flexible, child-led approach
Artistic improvement is the goal Emotional wellbeing is the goal

Our Difference:
We bridge both worlds maintaining a strong therapeutic foundation while also introducing unique art styles that are engaging, enjoyable, and result in artwork children feel proud of.

Why Choose Art Therapy for Your Child?

Art therapy offers children a space where they can:

  • Feel safe without pressure to “perform”
  • Express themselves freely
  • Build emotional resilience
  • Develop lifelong coping skills
  • Enjoy the creative process and feel proud of their creations

For many children, especially those who struggle with traditional talk-based approaches, art therapy becomes a bridge between their inner world and the outside world.

Final Thoughts

Every child deserves to feel heard, understood, and supported. Art therapy provides a gentle yet powerful pathway to help children navigate their emotions and grow into confident, self-aware individuals.

At Paeds in a Pod, our approach ensures that children not only experience the healing power of art but also leave each session with a sense of joy, achievement, and pride in what they’ve created.

If you’re curious about whether art therapy might benefit your child, we’d be happy to guide you through the next steps.
