Why APAP?
Children with disabilities are often insufficiently active and this inactivity can further compound the effects of their primary condition, reducing physical health and fitness, mental health and well-being and opportunities to socialise and make friends. Specifically, good evidence demonstrates that children who are insufficiently physically active have increased risk of:
- Developing many diseases including obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes
- Experiencing low self-esteem and depression
- Reduced social skills and pro-social behaviours
Conversely, children who are sufficiently active on a regular basis accrue a range of benefits including:
- Improve independence and self-image
- Positively impact mental health
- Prevent or reduce certain co-morbidities such as chronic pain
- Increase social contact and facilitate social and community re-entry
- Enhance cognitive function including attention, memory and problem solving
How does APAP help?

Children with significant physical or psychological health conditions can find it hard to participate in a range of functional and social activities. APAP assists children and their families to overcome these barriers through:
- Individually tailored programs and exercise
- Taking family schedule into account
- Identifying activities that are affordable and or accessible
- Looking at activities that are interesting and engaging to your child
APAP gets them more physically active in a way that is safe, effective and that they will enjoy and maintain.
